Although
only 22 years young, Don Dooley’s persona strikes many as that of an “old
soul.” As amazingly energetic as
he is driven, this yet undiscovered raw talent has the gift of potential musical
genius.
A self-taught
guitarist, singer and songwriter who first picked up the guitar at the age of
sixteen, Donny’s natural gift and love for music was purely developed by ear,
sight and undoubtedly through a bit of “osmosis” from years spent with his
musically inclined Father and mentor, Don Unger.
As a result, he pursues his life and music with gusto, living by his
motto that, “a life without self belief is fruitless.”
In Donny’s own words: “I
started playing violin by ear in elementary school but by High School, my
father’s enviable natural talent for the guitar inspired me to immerse myself
as he had done. He would play and
sing around the campfire with our family and friends for hours and the respect,
appreciation and admiration his talent earned him at such a young age engendered
a sense of pride and self-confidence I knew I too had to cultivate as a part of
what defined me.
My Dad’s
amazing collection of LP’s, were meticulously kept in alphabetical order, all
in their original covers. His
passion for every genre of music from the Blues, Rock and Roll, Country and Jazz
to Classical music quickly became my inspiration too. When I first heard an
album by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, I was instantly moved to learn the Blues.
As with the
variety of music that initially inspired me, I began to methodically pick apart
their entire album to learn it chord-by-chord and word-by-word.
As a result, the Blues are a dominant influence in my music, as you will
hear on this, my debut CD, “The Jumping Off Point.”
Other notable musical influences in
my life include Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hot Tuna,
Jorma Kaukonen, Johnny Lang, Bela Fleck, Steely Dan, Rehab, Dan Fogleberg, Keb
Mo and Atmosphere.”
Don currently lives and pursues his passion for music in
Colorado
, close to much of his family, where he performs in clubs and coffee houses
throughout
Colorado Springs
. Concurrently, he juggles work,
charitable initiatives to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and his #1
priority, college; where he works daily to augment his natural musical talent
through formal musical training, theory, composition and performances of his
original and rapidly growing anthology of his original musical endeavors.
Don’s dream is that through his hard work, tenacity and his unrelenting
commitment to become “polished,” he will someday earn the privilege of
becoming one of the Music Industry’s true “diamonds!”
